Abstract
This master’s thesis examines 21 master’s theses written in Library and Information Science in Sweden between the years 2010 and 2013. The master’s theses are written in Lund, Borås and Uppsala and all of them have literature and/or reading as subject matters. The aim of the thesis is to investigate how master’s theses in our time handle the question of reading and literature as a subject matter in Library and Information Science. The overall questions of the thesis are: how are the subject matters literature and reading handled in the master’s theses written within LIS in Sweden? Which theories and methods are used and how does that influence the subject matter? Which similarities and differences are there between the different theses?

The aim of the thesis is to investigate how master’s theses in our time handle the question of reading and literature as a subject matter in Library and Information Science. The overall questions of the thesis are: how are the subject matters literature and reading handled in the master’s theses written within LIS in Sweden? Which theories and methods are used and how does that influence the subject matter? Which similarities and differences are there between the different theses?
The theory and methodology used is hermeneutical. Hermeneutics is the theory of text interpretation which means it can be used both as a theoretical framework to understand the premises in which the theses in question is meant to be understood and as a methodological tool to interpret the texts. The thesis rests on the idea of a thesis as a kind of communication using Roman Jacobson’s communications-model. This in turn means that the context in which the thesis is written is of importance and merits the use of hermeneutical concepts such as Hans-Georg Gadamer’s prejudice and Stanley Fish’s interpretive communities.
The analysis is divided into a chapters relating to subject matter, theory, method and quality and literacy; two recurring themes in the theses. The analysis show that the theses are built upon a fundamentally positive view on literature and reading and the public libraries role in mediating literature and promoting reading. A possible explanation for this; LIS ties to the professional field and the authors prejudices and preunderstandings relating to literature, reading and public libraries, is proposed. The analysis also reveals that the vast majority of the theses use interviews as their methods but that they show a greater diversity in their use of theories and in the extent to which the theories are implemented within the theses. Furthermore, the analysis show that some differences between the theses, on the basis of where they are written, can be observed and although this can be attributed to de different interpretive communities that the authors can be said to belong to, the fact that the analysis consists of a relatively small number of theses limits the ability to make any long going conclusions.
