- Abstract
- This thesis includes eight pupils in their final year of a vocational secondary school education, aspiring to become truck drivers, in a small town in southern Sweden. Through a hermeneutic and qualitative methodological approach the main aim was to understand these pupils and their view on matters regarding their training program, environmental problems, transports link to environmental impact, and Ecodriving – with the secondary intention of providing some didactic advices on how to motivate them to address environ-mental issues, develop environmental friendly attitudes, embrace Ecodriving, in order to successfully implement the idea of Education for sustainable development (ESD) as an integrated part of their training-program.... - This thesis includes eight pupils in their final year of a vocational secondary school education, aspiring to become truck drivers, in a small town in southern Sweden. Through a hermeneutic and qualitative methodological approach the main aim was to understand these pupils and their view on matters regarding their training program, environmental problems, transports link to environmental impact, and Ecodriving – with the secondary intention of providing some didactic advices on how to motivate them to address environ-mental issues, develop environmental friendly attitudes, embrace Ecodriving, in order to successfully implement the idea of Education for sustainable development (ESD) as an integrated part of their training-program. Interviews and observations were used to provide the empirical material for the study. The findings suggest that the pupils are very satisfied with the program – especially the practical elements – although they seem to strongly dislike the theoretical elements. Likewise, and possibly therefore, they don’t show much interest in environmental issues, and exhibits what is perceived as serious flaws in their under-standing of environmental problems. Further, they are not particularly fond of discussing transports impact on the environment – possibly due to the risk of exposing themselves to an existential crisis and moral dilemma, since cars and trucks seem to be a vital part of these pupils’ identity and associated with positive feelings such as belonging, freedom and enjoyment. Finally, although they exhibit good knowledge in the concept of Ecodriving, and can see the use for it in different contexts – especially economic and work related ones – they don’t seem to be very enthusiastic about it. They consider it grueling, slow and boring. This might be due to cultural factors, which will require further sociological and anthropological ethnographic research. (Less)
