- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine how staff members of an orphanage in north Poland, operate their work to meet children's developmental needs related to Maslow's theory of hierarchy of needs. By semi-structured interviews with four of the staff members, their understanding of the children’s developmental needs were studied. The study also focused on the strategies used by the staff to ensure and stimulate the needs of orphans. The interviews were analyzed and discussed by using Abraham Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs. The results showed that staff understood the concept of Maslow’s pyramid of needs and regarded the needs at the bottom of the Maslow pyramid as necessary to meet in order to ensure the children's self-actualization.... The results showed that staff understood the concept of Maslow’s pyramid of needs and regarded the needs at the bottom of the Maslow pyramid as necessary to meet in order to ensure the children's self-actualization. They also tried to provide children with the opportunity to develop within each higher stage of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. An example was education, since many of the children can have four-year delay in learning due to neglect in the family. By helping the children respect “rules” at a more basic level, this would provide the base for developing knowledge and skills at a higher level in the educational system. The conclusion of the study was that the staff members were well aware of the hierarchy of needs’ role in enhancing the children’s development and that they applied caring strategies accordingly.
