Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine how working as a psychologist can affect the private life and how psychologists manage to separate the private self from the self in the role of the psychologist. A secondary aim was to explore ideas and expectations on the role of a psychologist. There were few prior studies in the area why an explorative approach was chosen. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with nine practicing psychologists recruited through Facebook and our circle of acquaintances. The study takes a qualitative approach and the material is analysed with Thematic Analysis, where eight themes were identified. The most prominent result was an overall effect on private life of working as a psychologist. When one's... (More)

The most prominent result was an overall effect on private life of working as a psychologist. When one's profession as a psychologist was revealed, personal freedom was often perceived to be constrained. Psychologists use their own self as an instrument in their work and therefore require to separate the two roles and to have room for free time, spontaneity and recovery. Our findings indicate a need for early reflection on the consequences for private life and personal identity of working as a psychologist. It is recommended that the psychology program provides tools to facilitate this process. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
