- Uppsatsens syfte är att studera manlig prostitution så som den framträder i svensk dagspress mellan åren 1993-2013 och därvid jämföra manlig heterosexuell respektive homosexuell prostitution. De frågeställningar som undersöks är vilken bild som framträder för dessa grupper, vilka likheter och skillnader som finns mellan dem samt vilken förklaring Connell och Hirdmans genusteori skulle ge till dessa eventuella skillnader. För att undersöka ”vilken bild” som kommer fram för respektive grupp läggs det fokus på en rad underfrågor, exempelvis varför de började sälja sex, hur de beskriver sin situation och i vilka åldrar de började prostituera sig etc.
Det som kommer fram i analysen är att relativt olika bilder framträder för dessa grupper.... Det som kommer fram i analysen är att relativt olika bilder framträder för dessa grupper. För den heterosexuella prostitutionen framträder den manliga säljaren som en aktör och har överlag positiva upplevelser av att sälja sex. För den homosexuella prostitutionen är bilden i en majoritet av fallen motsatt: Här framträdde istället bilden av ett offer med överlag negativa upplevelser av att sälja sex. Det som samstämde för båda grupperna var att man höll sitt sexsäljande hemligt.
Skillnaderna i upplevelser förklaras med Connells begrepp Makt (genom att vara en heterosexuell man befinner man sig på en överordnad position i samhället), Katexis (det heterosexuella sexet är överordnade annat sexet), Deltagande (även om en man inte befinner sig på en arena som reproducerar hegemonisk manlighet åtnjuter han ändå dess fördelar) och Underordning (dominans mellan olika grupper av män).
Hirdmans genusteori, som också delar Connells maktbegrepp, ger verktyg för att förklara varför de prostituerade håller sitt sexsäljande hemligt: Genom att prostitution ses som en kvinnlig syssla står det varken för något normalt eller allmängiltigt vilket medför en låg status. (Less) - Abstract

What was consistent for both groups was that they kept their selling sex a secret.
The differences in experiences explained by Connell's concept of power ( by being a heterosexual man finds oneself in a superior position in society ) , Katexis ( heterosexual sex is superior other sex ) , Participation ( even if you are not at an arena that reproduce hegemonic masculinity , he enjoys yet its benefits ) and subordination ( dominance between different groups of males ) .
Hird 's gender theory , which also shares Connell's concept of power , providing tools to explain why the prostitutes will hold its selling sex secret : By that prostitution is seen as a female occupation , it is neither for any normal or universal , resulting in low status. (Less)
