Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
This thesis intends to shed light on the creation of student’s social status in school
focusing on what forms and effects social hierarchies between different programs in
Malmö Academy of music. The study is based on the interviews I have conducted
with five different participants while the interview questions are based on social status
and hierarchies. How does the teachers and former students reason regarding how
hierarchies are created within Malmö Academy of music? What does the informants
believe regarding how the teachers role affect status and hierarchies? Why are such
hierarchies shaped the way they are according to the informants? The thesis shows
that the informants believe that the hierarchies within Malmö Academy of... (More)

hierarchies shaped the way they are according to the informants? The thesis shows
that the informants believe that the hierarchies within Malmö Academy of music are
conceived by perception of musical skill, norms and comparisons among the students.
The analysis also shows that the informants believe that the teacher plays an
important role regarding status and hierarchies among the students. The reason why
hierarchies within the school are shaped the way they are has to do with the location
of the school, with what students regard as the most attractive; broad or specialized
musical knowledge, but also how segregated the different programs are from each
other, according to the informants. In the literature review I will give a background to
how the school system functions regarding status, hierarchies, power structures,
teacher influence and what common school culture might look like. Then I will draw
on the situation in Malmö Academy of music and link it to the theory. Is the power
and hierarchical structures of the school then embedded within the walls of the
institution? This question has gotten a number of answers, but according to former
students they regard the hierarchical structures to be embedded within the school. The
participating teachers in the study claimed that already in their time as students, there
were status differences and hierarchies, especially between the musician programs
and the music teacher program, so it implies that part of these constructions of
hierarchies have deep roots and are embedded within Malmö Academy of music. (Less)
