Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of new fathers’ experiences of psychological distress in connection with becoming a parent. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven new fathers who identified themselves as experiencing depressive symptoms. Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data, and six themes were identified: The heavy workload, Not being good enough, The only dad in the world, Life passes by outside, No space for vulnerability, and Being on the outside. Fathers described feelings of sadness, exhaustion, stress, isolation, anger, guilt, powerlessness and inadequacy. They reported a lack of opportunities to rest and recover and how this leads to fatigue and feelings of inadequacy as a parent.... (More)

Fathers described feelings of sadness, exhaustion, stress, isolation, anger, guilt, powerlessness and inadequacy. They reported a lack of opportunities to rest and recover and how this leads to fatigue and feelings of inadequacy as a parent. Furthermore, they described experiencing a lack of belonging, both socially and in their parenthood and their suffering, as well as experiencing that their partner has better opportunities as a parent. These results suggest that the fathers’ psychological suffering is more multifaceted and diverse than previously believed. The study contributes a broader perspective than previous research that has attempted to understand fathers’ experiences within the framework of symptoms of depression. (Less)
