Purpose
Middle managers role within the public sector is constantly changing while it is also them who must ensure that changes are implemented. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of the middle managers in the context of change management.
Method Six middle managers in the public sector were interviewed about their experiences regarding the role associated with the change process. They all work at the same hospital. Results The results shows that the role of the change process involves interpretation at different levels. Middle-managers interpret what, how and why the changes should be implemented to be able to perform and maintain the change. Time and support are important factors in the process.

The final discussion investigates the interpretation process and the need of facilities. This paper presents two conclusions regarding the role of middle managers in the context of change. 1. Need of tools in the phase of undertaking personal change. 2. Lack of tools affects the result in the interpretation phase of undertaking personal change.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva hur mellanchefer inom hälso- och sjukvården upplever rollen i förhållande till förändringsarbete. Företag och organisationer präglas av ständiga förändringar. Hälso- och sjukvården är en bransch som upplevt stora förändringar de senaste åren. Syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva hur mellanchefer inom hälso- och sjukvården upplever rollen i förhållande till förändringsarbete. Yrkesrollen mellanchef förändras ständigt inom hälso- och sjukvården och blir allt mer administrativ. På grund av att rollen fått en mer administrativ karaktär har rollen gått från benämningen första linjens chef till mellanchef. Första linjens chefer är mer involverade i det praktiska arbetet jämför med mellanchefer. Resultatet i denna uppsats visar att mellanchefer behöver hjälpmedel för att tolka både sin roll och förändringarna de förväntas genomföra. Uppsatsen belyser även hur det är att arbeta i en organisation med högt förändringstryck och samtidigt ha ansvar för att implementera förändring.
Resultaten kan användas till att genomföra förbättringsåtgärder gällande mellanchefers arbetsbeskrivning och på så vis säkerställa att mellanchefer och övre ledning har samma uppfattning om mellanchefens roll. Om arbetsförhållanden för mellanchefer förbättras kan situationen inom hälso- och sjukvården effektiviseras vilket påverkar både medarbetare och patienter.
Resultaten är baserade på sex semistrukturerade intervjuer med enhetschefer på ett sjukhus i Skåne. Valet av ämne framkom genom samtal med respondenterna. (Less)
