This study explores close friendship between older women and is based on ten in-depth interviews with women between seventy and eighty-five. The aim of this research is to understand friendship in a life perspective; how friendship is lived and practiced; how older women reflect the meaning of friendship in their lives, and how the interaction of friendship contributes to the informants' experience of the Self.
Using psychoanalytic object relations theory and feminist philosophy where the self is understood as a narrative you, I investigate how the informants friendship are made, based on their ideals of friendship as reciprocal, confident, effortless and joyful. I do also explore how the informants recognize or not, similarities between love and friendship and how the borderland of intimacy is handled. The sense of reciprocity can in these informants' lives occasionally go beyond identification of equality, by creating reciprocity in a complementary way. Consistently throughout the interviews conversation is central to the friendships and constitutes an arena for negotiation of similarity and difference, reciprocity and security. I also conclude that temporality can be a way to understand how to handle problems in the relation. (Less)
