Islam + terrorism = sant?
(2015) STVK02 20151Department of Political Science
- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis has been to examine how Fox News Channel, the leading American cable news channel, portray terrorism, using the Charlie Hebdo attack as case study, to see whether they are clear in their descriptions of the extremist interpretations of Islam as unrepresentative of the religion as a whole. By using Norman Faircloug’s model for a Critical Discourse Analysis, and Orientalism as a starting point, three prominent discourses are found. My conclusion is that Fox News Channel makes a great distinction between ”us” and ”them” when describing terrorism, using stereotypes connected to Orientalism.
