Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate what motivates students to begin playing a brass instrument and the factors that motivate them to continue in the Community School of Music and Arts. The background for this study is that the number of students on brass instruments in the Community Schools of Music and Arts in Sweden has been decreasing for many years.

Data collection was performed through group interviews with 11 students in 3 age-based groups.

The result concludes that the companionship and cohesion that is created by group lessons, ensembles, concerts and tours is important for the students. It is also clear that the more influence the students have over their education, the greater the motivation will be to continue... (More)
