- Abstract
- This study aims to determine the current discourses related to the portrayal of the female gender and femininity in the yearly activity reports of Swedish organizations providing humanitarian aid to developing countries. The study identifies and outlines the current discourses related to femininity and determines which discourses are more prevalent in the material than others. The study also utilizes poststructuralist and postcolonial feminist theories to analyze what power structures and gender identities these discourses are producing and reproducing. - This study aims to determine the current discourses related to the portrayal of the female gender and femininity in the yearly activity reports of Swedish organizations providing humanitarian aid to developing countries. The study identifies and outlines the current discourses related to femininity and determines which discourses are more prevalent in the material than others. The study also utilizes poststructuralist and postcolonial feminist theories to analyze what power structures and gender identities these discourses are producing and reproducing. The study is a multimedia discourse analysis which analyzes the chosen material on two levels, through written text as well as through images. The study finds that victimhood, dependence, motherhood and objectification are common discourses related to femininity in the analyzed material. A few weaker discourses were also identified, revolving around women’s independence as capable actors. Overall, the discourses related to womanhood found in the text are according to poststructuralist and postcolonial feminist theory constructing and reproducing clear gender identities which reinforce patriarchic values of women as “lesser”, a message that counteracts the goals of gender equality the aid organization are trying to accomplish.
