The study is a multimedia discourse analysis which analyzes the chosen material on two levels, through written text as well as through images. The study finds that victimhood, dependence, motherhood and objectification are common discourses related to femininity in the analyzed material. A few weaker discourses were also identified, revolving around women’s independence as capable actors. Overall, the discourses related to womanhood found in the text are according to poststructuralist and postcolonial feminist theory constructing and reproducing clear gender identities which reinforce patriarchic values of women as “lesser”, a message that counteracts the goals of gender equality the aid organization are trying to accomplish.
