people’s human rights. Therefore the purpose of this essay is to discuss the consequences of
the EU’s approach to migration and asylum, in relation to human rights. Three themes have

2015.
One theme identifies the EU’s focus on security. How the EU’s approach shows a direction
towards an increasing security focus is the concrete issue for this essay. The relation between
a possible security focus and the other two themes: the definitions of migrants and migration,
and also, EUs actions outside of the union in relation to the migration- and asylum
question, creates a discussion that comply with the purpose of the essay.
The EU’s approach to migration is analysed and discussed in a content analysis that
combines the theoretical perspectives on security, inclusion, exclusion, and universal human
rights. This analysis shows that the EU is including people that comply with the EU’s own
interests. Additionally, the analysis shows that the EU excludes almost everyone who does
not comply with the EU’s interests from its territory and from its protection. The EU is even
interfering with people’s right to seek international protection - asylum. Therefore, the EU
violates and disrespects the universality of human rights. (Less)
