Abstract
The following report contains a fire safety evaluation of Högsboanstalten in Gothenburg. The purpose of this report is to analyse different fire scenarios to see if the chosen building can be evacuated safely in case of fire. This is done by comparing total evacuation time with the time until critical conditions have been reached. When critical conditions occur, safe evacuation can no longer be guaranteed. One of the main difficulties is that all doors and exits are locked, and thus inmates always need to be assisted by a member of staff to be able to evacuate.

The evacuation time during the day is calculated by hand while evacuation during the night is calculated with the simulation program ERM. The chosen fire scenarios are simulated with CFAST and FDS to calculate time until critical conditions occur. The conclusion from the report is that changes are required as to be able to ensure safe egress from the building. The following improvements must be done:
• The smoke vents in workshop area needs to open automatically in case of detector activation.
• A second emergency exit from the study hall corridor.
• The emergency exit from the workshop area must be cleared.
• The fire sections must be intact.
• New routines for evacuation during nighttime.
• At least one evacuation drill every year.
• Inmates are not to be left without supervision in the workshop area. (Less)
