In December 2014 Swedish radio leaked that Swedish police kept a record about women reporting that they have been exposed to domestic violence. The record contained subjective comments about 2500 women. The record has been established and used during the years 2004-2014. In this essay, the record is analysed with theories about femininity, intersectionality and Nils Christie’s theory about ideal victims. As a method, discourse analysis is used, and shows the police’s image of the victims as failing to claim a normative femininity. This affects the way the women exposed to domestic violence is treated and understood as victims, and in long term how these women are treated by Swedish police. The essay claims to show how domestic violence is focusing on the women as a complainant, instead of the man as the crime suspect. (Less)
