We have used a qualitative method, which means we have interpreted the texts. Our selection has consisted of two report books, two articles and one autobiography. All the texts that we have analyzed, with exception to the one where a prison officer talks about help from society, have contained stories of imprisoned parents. All stories have in common that they contain themes of guilt and sorrow, but there is a difference in how the parents talk about this. We think this is because the different circumstances of the parents during their imprisonment and their relationship to the child. We found that there seems to be a larger stigma to be an imprisoned mother rather than an imprisoned father and we believe this difference is a consequence of society’s norms and values. All parents in the study are critical to the support society offers, and thinks that there is more to wish for. (Less)
