"The dishes can wait...": A qualitative study on good quality of eldercare from the view of health care assistants

The aim of this study was to examine and describe how health care assistants working in nursing homes for the elderly reflect on good quality of care. The material was then analyzed on the basis of two theories; rationality of care and organizational structure. The results showed that good quality of care for the elderly were defined as a combination of practical help, social involvement, the opportunity to participate in decision making of their own care and a sense of security.... The results showed that good quality of care for the elderly were defined as a combination of practical help, social involvement, the opportunity to participate in decision making of their own care and a sense of security. Important elements for good quality of care was proper documentation, a designated staff contact person, competent management and trained health care assistants with personal suitability. Elements opposing good quality of care were lack of time and being understaffed. (Less)
