Abstract
This study examines magic idealism as well as the representation and function of
music in the novel El penúltimo sueño by the Colombian author Ángela Becerra. The
assumption is made that there is a connection between music and magic idealism in
the novel. In the analysis several recurring trends of magical idealism and music are
identified. Music is represented as a companion in times of joy and sorrow and as an
art that has the power to seduce its listeners. It is stated that the classical music
enhances the romantic atmosphere of the novel. The relation between magic idealism
and magical realism is addressed. Through fragments taken from the novel it is
shown that the magic that occurs is triggered by emotions of joy or sadness... (More)

shown that the magic that occurs is triggered by emotions of joy or sadness and it is
therefore stated that the definition of magic idealism as the magical effects of the
emotions is valid. Finally, it is stated that music can be affected by magic, that music
can create an emotional reaction which in turn creates magic and that both music and
magic are a means of expressing emotions. These aspects allow us to consider the
hypothesis as proven. (Less)

(Less)
