- Abstract
- This paper is about creating identity based on music making as a leisure activity. The questions asked are about how cultural practicing at leisure contributes to the creation of identity, how the roles and self-image is affected by the exercise, if everyone has the dream of making a living on their music still and if one can learn anything beyond the expected by his/hers leisure activity. The paper has a strong sociological perspective, and most of the earlier research and theory is within this field of study.
The research interviews have been conducted with four musicians who all have a job, at the side of their music making, as their main source of income. The research interviews have been conducted with four musicians who all have a job, at the side of their music making, as their main source of income. What emerged is that they all see the music as a very important part of their identity and that they carry their music with them in their daily lives. It is still an important part of them, where they get an outlet for their creativity, although they have trouble seeing that they could support themselves with their music. Their approach to their leisure as important makes other things in life, such as a full-time job, less important. However they end up in a dilemma situation where the less important job is needed to enable them to carry on with their music. Through their active pursuit they have assimilated knowledge that can be difficult to learn in a formal education. (Less)
