Abstract
Given the paradigms which are currently predominant in child and adolescent psychiatry and the changes in the societal view of children’s psychological health, this study examined parental attitudes towards the causes of ADHD and if these were related to choices of treatment. The aim of the study was to determine whether there was a need for treatment which addressed more than just the ADHD symptoms of the child. The study was a questionnaire survey (N = 65) and targeted parents of children with ADHD or ADD diagnoses. Parental beliefs about the causes of ADHD were varied and generated complex descriptions in line with what other area-related research studies have shown. The study showed a weak correlation between parental beliefs about... (More)

Parental beliefs about the causes of ADHD were varied and generated complex descriptions in line with what other area-related research studies have shown. The study showed a weak correlation between parental beliefs about ADHD and choice of treatment. The parents requested a wide range of professional help. Correlations were seen between parents’ goals and choice of treatment as well as between the rated well-being of parents and children and choice of treatment. Conclusions were made that there are grounds for providing different types of treatment for children with ADHD diagnoses and their families. A systemic view is helpful where the treatment provider needs to be able to satisfy a diversity of families with varying needs. Exploring the goals of each family member can be an important starting point for shared decision making. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
(Less)
