Video games market in China and its impact on foreign console platform adoption

Kozajeva, Darja LU (2015) EKHM51 20151
Department of Economic History
Abstract
In this paper the author will attempt to lay a foundation of information regarding entrants into the HD interactive entertainment or “video games” market in China using the Porter five competitive forces framework which helps measure the level of competition of the market. Since the entertainment industry in China is heavily regulated by government and gaming consoles have only been released from an 14 year ban very recently, the author will also detail how this affects other market forces, like existing competitors which may pose a threat to international publishers and manufacturers. This paper will explore tertiary issues with the Chinese market, such as cheap labour leading to “gold farming” or potential issues with piracy.
