Through an argument analysis of relevant documents from the government and the parliament, arguments was identified as pro-argument or contra-argument. They was then analyzed with respect to scientific articles and writings in the matter of deterrence and violent crimes. Most of the studies in the question of deterrence and crime are of a weak methodology. Some new research, however, shows that there might be a deterrent effect of harsher and stricter sentence. The government or those supporting its bill in the parliament, nevertheless never speak of a deterrent effect as a reason for their bill. The important factor for them is the development of society and that the victim feels compensated. The opponents of the bill on the other hand mostly discuss the lack of evidence for harsher sentence being deterrent and ask for more crime-preventive work. (Less)
