Abstract
A content analysis discussing questions about Swedish furniture tradition, as well as the using of inspiration from the Swedish nature and cultural heritage in design. The study regards Swedish designers Carl Malmsten and Mats Theselius in specific. The author is basing the analysis on literary work, and in the case of Theselius also an interview, to get a broader understanding of their works and design philosophy.

The thesis is asking how Carl Malmsten in beginning of the 20th century and Mats Theselius in the late 20th century to the beginning of the 21th century have been using design elements which are considered typically Swedish. The thesis is asking how Carl Malmsten in beginning of the 20th century and Mats Theselius in the late 20th century to the beginning of the 21th century have been using design elements which are considered typically Swedish. These idioms are, amongst other things, the Swedish nature, older furniture tradition such as the Gustavian and from the rural population. Also political tendencies and historical phonemenons that are relevant to the thesis will be brought up.

To contextualize the question formulation, the author is reviewing differences in Malmstens and Theselius conditions and intentions. The author is studying the culture within their differing time of life in the 19th, 20th and 21th century, to understand how this influences their relationship to tradition, choice of work material and technical development.

The author finds differences between Malmsten and Theselius based on Malmsten operating close to the older, more strict traditions of Swedish furniture design. Whilst Theselius time is after the modernist break-through, which changes the whole perspective on history. Both designers are loyal to typically Swedish work material and interested in historical angles of vision. Although Malmsten is preserving more traditional techniques and is characterized by a more low-key approach. Theselius is using untraditional work materials and is more experimental in his orientation. (Less)
