- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- Which are the factors that affect the music teachers’ perception of their ability to teach in accordance with the syllabus requirements? What is needed to enable music education of high quality? What strategies do music teachers to teach in school environments where equipment and other conditions are substandard? These questions drive this study forward. It is a common perception that classrooms for music are badly equipped, that the resources are scarce and that the classes are too large for qualitative music teaching to take place.

These questions drive this study forward. It is a common perception that classrooms for music are badly equipped, that the resources are scarce and that the classes are too large for qualitative music teaching to take place.
This study investigates, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, where the problems are, seen from teachers' point of view. What is the situation in Swedish music classroom and how do the teachers who actually work there feel about it? What are the principals’ reactions and what needs to be done where teachers are dissatisfied with the situation? The results show that most music teachers have a rather good amount of resources and that it is equal on most schools. However, there are schools that have better resources and there are schools with worse resources. The equipment that most teachers lack is digital resources while the biggest problem is the size of groups in relation to the lack of space. Music teachers often find strategies to work around the obstacles they are faced with but this is almost always done at the cost of something else. (Less)
