Abstract
The study examined social workers experiences in their work with adolescents in out-of-home care, focused on sexuality. The aim of the study was to understand their experiences with a constructionist perspective on sexuality and with a focus on the organizational context that the experiences were formed in. These perspectives were selected with the ambition to achieve an extensive view of the studied phenomena. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with six social workers employed at a type of institutional home in Sweden called “hem för vård och boende”. These are small institutions with the ambition to be less totalitarian than more traditional institutions. A goal-oriented sample was used to find the interviewees.... (More)
The study examined social workers experiences in their work with adolescents in out-of-home care, focused on sexuality. A goal-oriented sample was used to find the interviewees. Conclusions drawn from the study has shown that the social workers seem to have a bilateral role when working with the adolescents focused on sexuality, which can be explained with the organizational context they work in. They have experiences in supporting and encouraging the teenagers but also in controlling and rebuking them in their talk and actions linked to sexuality. The result also showed that a major part of the social workers experienced some difficulties and challenges in their work focused on sexuality and a lack of theoretical knowledge on how to handle the subject was noticeable. To some extent the social workers show awareness that sexuality can be understood as a system of power. They describe themselves as attending an accepting and tolerant mind-set when treating the adolescents focused on sexuality. However, at times they also describe sexuality in a traditionalistic way.
