Abstract
Today the self-proclaimed caliphate IS is one of the most feared and well known phenomenon of its time. Major military operations against the group have been initiated with the United States in the forefront but at the same time expression of opinions argue that IS has to be addressed in other ways than just military. The ideas of IS have been widely spread, this proliferation can be attributed to the fact that the group is a developed communication apparatus with a large-scale communication production. The ideas of IS have been widely spread, this proliferation can be attributed to the fact that the group is a developed communication apparatus with a large-scale communication production. This paper aims to investigate how IS uses message - and other communication strategies in their strategic communication in order to achieve their organizational goals. Furthermore, we seek to create an understanding of what IS is an example of in today's societal context. In turn, the results aim to serve as a basis for solutions on how IS can be addressed in ways other than solely military and how similar groups can be prevented from emerging. We can conclude is that IS communication messages are based on a variety of themes that appeal to either perceptual or pragmatic factors. These messages have been designed on the basis of both message- and communication strategies and furthermore IS uses tactics on a semiotic and rhetorical level to strengthen and convey their messages in the most efficient way. Thus the success behind IS’s strategic communication is based on a combination of well-designed, strategic messages as well as a high-quality production. In addition to this we can also conclude that IS’s messages allude to universal driving forces in today's societal context. The logic behind the appeals of IS’s messages can be partly explained by Durkheim's secularization theory in which religion is seen as an important social function and a source of meaning and connectedness in a secular society. In addition, IS message strategy can also be understood through the issues Habermas discusses in a post-secular society. Conclusively IS strategy can also be explained through Foucault’s framework of discipline and punish in today's liberal and capitalist western society in which people lack clear frameworks and moral lecturing. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
(Less)
