Abstract
The current study investigated if perceived sport enjoyment, competence, autonomy, relatedness, and motivation would be able to predict leader-member exchange (LMX) quality. Participants (N = 89) were adolescence athletes, aged 15 to 18, participating in organized team sports, namely basketball, handball, and football. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used and the variables measured from the athletes’ perspective. Four instruments were used to assess the variables: The Leader-Member-Exchange scale (LMX7), Sport Enjoyment scale, Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sport Scale (BNSSS), and Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-II). Furthermore, five questions were constructed to assess demographics and background in sports. It was hypothesized... (More)

Furthermore, five questions were constructed to assess demographics and background in sports. It was hypothesized that the athletes perceived enjoyment, competence, autonomy, relatedness, and motivation would be able to predict and significantly contribute to the LMX quality. The results revealed that the model as a whole explained 44% of the variance in LMX quality. Moreover, all variables except motivation were significantly related to the LMX quality. However, only competence and autonomy did make a significant contribution to the relationship with LMX quality. (Less)
