Abstract
Environmental certification for buildings has become more common since the first certification system became available on the market in the 90s. Today there are hundreds of thousands buildings with an environmental certification. More and more companies choose to place their business in a certified building. The problem when companies are in the election of a new facility may be the lack of knowledge about environmental certifications for buildings and their contribution to the business. The purpose of this report is to investigate company’s knowledge of environmental certifications for buildings and how companies want to improve this knowledge. An environmental certification evaluates how environmentally adapted a building is and the building will after the evaluation receive a certificate showing its environmental performance. The most common environmental certifications for buildings in Sweden are GreenBuilding, Miljöbyggnad, LEED and BREEAM. All four systems contain different levels that give a certificate depending on how well the building fulfills the requirements of the certification. The methods that have been used to clarify the purpose of the report are a literature study and a survey. The literature study is about the four most common environmental certification systems for buildings and what a certified building can contribute. This information has later been used to design a survey which was sent to 115 randomly selected companies. The main conclusion from the case study is that many companies lack knowledge about environmental certification of buildings. The companies mainly lack knowledge about the costs of environmental certifications but also about their extent. Another conclusion that the case study brings forward is that there is a large interest in increasing the knowledge of environmental certifications for buildings. The result of the survey shows that companies want to increase this knowledge through self-learning or external education. To fill the gap in knowledge about environmental certification of buildings, it has been designed a draft of a brochure. This brochure can be useful when companies are in the selection of a new facility. (Less)
