Popular Abstract
This research is inspired by the concerns of deterioration of the environment by human activities. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 90% of all businesses in the world. SMEs as organizational level members of societies are responsible for environmental sustainability as other society members for the damages of their business activities to the environment.

The current study aims to investigate the enablers and opportunities of Green IS adop-tion in SMEs in order to gain environmental sustainability. We intend to examine and build theories by using grounded theory approach in SMEs. According to former Green IS schol-ars, we form our basis for the investigation and answer the research questions by analyzing data from eight interviews to the decision-makers of SMEs from China and Sweden.
The investigation demonstrates that few SMEs already have Green IS profile. Howev-er, regulation and design are found as the enablers that promote the development of Green IS in SMEs. In addition , we found several opportunities that Green IS adoption could have in SMEs towards sustainability achievement, including belief/behavior forming, informate, reduce costs & add revenue, energy informatics, information strategy, work efficiency, or-ganizational transformation, innovation, company reputation and competitiveness. As an additional incentive, we also report the challenges of Green IS adoption by SMEs, which were the unexpected findings of the research: 1) lack of Green IS knowledge in SMEs and 2) environmental impact deny by SMEs’ decision makers. SMEs’ stakeholders should realize the opportunities of Green IS, and take action to adopt it in order to gain environmental and social sustainability, as well as economic development growth. (Less)
