Abstract
In this thesis it is discussed how the representation of Serena Williams in media can be understood through the lens of black feminist thought. Furthermore it is argued how the same image can be understood as empowering and oppressive. Through a combination of discourse analysis and document analysis the author examines the representation of Williams in several photographs and articles as our perception of her body and accomplishments is controlled by the discourse created in media. The thesis is therefore focused on the image of Williams body which is represented as mannish and muscular, hyper feminine and powerful, and last but not least as a body study which reveals a fascination of her body.
