Abstract
6 % of all fractures are located at the proximal humerus. Proximal humerus fractures are the third most common fracture amongst elderly and 80 % of the patients are women. Today there are no existing standardized treatment protocol for elderly with this kind of injury. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation was to examine if and also how the conservative treatment of proximal humerus fractures could be refined.
In this thesis work a model in the OpenSim software was used to find a position of the arm that generates small reaction forces at the shoulder joint. In this thesis work a model in the OpenSim software was used to find a position of the arm that generates small reaction forces at the shoulder joint. A prototype that holds the arm in this position was then created. The product is supposed to be used together with an already existing orthosis by the NordiCare company called HumerusComfort. The purpose is that by using these facilities during the healing process the advantageous position will cause the patients less pain.
EMG-measurements was performed with the prototype to observe the muscle activity when wearing it. The prototype was also tried out on a few patients suffering from proximal humeral fractures. This was to test the fit and the perceived experience of the patients in order to be able to further develop the product in the future.
One of the conclusions from this dissertation is that from all the investigated positions there is one that causes less reaction forces in the shoulder joint. If this position is kept during the healing process it might hurt less. This new prototype may be a first step towards a necessary standardized treatment protocol for elderly even if there is much work left before an approved product is finished. (Less)
