- Abstract
- The essay aims to highlight the importance of having an intersectional perspective in historical museums in Sweden, with a special focus on Kvinnohistoriska Museet in Umeå. The idea of this paper has been to highlight some of the different theories that leads to an intersectional perspective and secondly to argue that this perspective is of importance and should be a part of the national guidelines from Kulturrådet, linked to the cultural policy objectives that persist that everyone should be able to participate in cultural activities. The method consists of both text analysis and of interview. - The essay aims to highlight the importance of having an intersectional perspective in historical museums in Sweden, with a special focus on Kvinnohistoriska Museet in Umeå. The idea of this paper has been to highlight some of the different theories that leads to an intersectional perspective and secondly to argue that this perspective is of importance and should be a part of the national guidelines from Kulturrådet, linked to the cultural policy objectives that persist that everyone should be able to participate in cultural activities. The paper concludes that it is readily possible to reformulate the cultural policy objectives and by this reformulation put the intersectional analysis on the agenda. But it takes more than only words to enhance visibility of the existing power structures. As Wera Grahn demonstrates in her book Genuskonstruktioner och museet, a continuous education of the museum staff is required to further understand the importance of a wider perspective at the exhibitions. However, the author of this essay sees a possibly bright on the future, and believes that Kvinnohistoriska Museet in Umeå will take the lead and serve as an informational center for all swedish museums in the work required to bring in the intersectional analysis in account for further exhibitions.
