- The subject of this thesis is derived from the scientific problem of the encounter between history and politics. The aim is to analyse the Sweden Democrats' use of history which manifests itself in their political rhetoric. Specifically, the importance of their interest in history in their struggle to attain dominance over the interpretation and arrangement of Swedish history as a whole. My primary sources consist of the party's official magazine, election manifestos, and party programs. I approach these sources from a hermeneutic perspective and analyse the structure of their national narrative with the principal aim of understanding the power of attraction the party holds for its members and voters. - The subject of this thesis is derived from the scientific problem of the encounter between history and politics. The aim is to analyse the Sweden Democrats' use of history which manifests itself in their political rhetoric. Specifically, the importance of their interest in history in their struggle to attain dominance over the interpretation and arrangement of Swedish history as a whole. My primary sources consist of the party's official magazine, election manifestos, and party programs. I approach these sources from a hermeneutic perspective and analyse the structure of their national narrative with the principal aim of understanding the power of attraction the party holds for its members and voters. In the analysis, I show how the Sweden Democrats employ existential, ideological, and political-pedagogical uses of history; how their interpretation of Swedish history is anchored in the works and historical culture of practicing historians during the turn of the twentieth century; how changes in which concepts dominates their narrative over time has led to a shift from emphasis on the grand heroes from the past to references to “Folkhemmet” (Peoples Home), as being the most important symbol of the unicity in Swedish history; how the structure of their narrative creates connections and parallels between past, present and future; and that the Sweden Democrats are conscious of the products within Swedish historical culture which have been, and still are, successfully used to maintain an active historical consciousness. Subsequently, I infer that the conclusion of their narrative is that Sweden is disintegrating into a country divided against itself, due to excessive immigration and the crumbling of the once successful welfare state. The moral of their narrative is that the only way to restore Sweden to glory is to return to the social order which prevailed during the middle of the twentieth century. (Less)

- Syftet med denna uppsats är att analysera hur Sverigedemokraterna använder historia för att förmedla en berättelse om Sveriges historia som ger riktlinjer för nutiden. Frågorna jag ställer handlar om hur deras berättelse är uppbyggd, vilka deras syften är och varför historia är viktigt för deras politik. Jag undersöker också om det finns ändringar i deras berättelse över tid. Jag har analyserat innehållet i deras partitidning SD-Kuriren, valmanifesten samt deras parti- och principprogram för att se vilka historiska personer, händelser och epoker som lyfts fram som särskilt viktiga och vad dessa har för funktioner i deras berättelse om Sveriges historia. Det finns ett behov inom historievetenskapen att ta alla former av historieförmedling på allvar, vilket innebär att en av historikernas uppgifter är att undersöka hur berättelser byggs av och kring historiska fakta och hur historia används för olika syften.
Sverigedemokraterna försöker sudda ut skarvarna mellan dåtid, nutid och framtid för att visa på en kontinuerlig linje i Sveriges historia som inte får brytas. Det ger en historieskrivning av den svenska nationen som beständig i tusen år. Vikingatiden sägs vara starten för den unika svenskhet som senare medvetet odlats och förädlats. Historiska hjältar som Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson och Karl XII, böndernas eviga frihetstörst och den protestantiska kyrkan som en bärare av svenska värderingar och traditioner utgör grunden för vad Sverigedemokraterna anser har drivit Sveriges historia framåt. Förändringar sker i narrativet över tid och de historiska hjältarna hamnar i bakgrunden när folkhemmet används som symbol för resultatet av en unikt svensk politisk utveckling som baseras på solidaritet och nationell gemenskap. När Sverigedemokraterna riktar fokus mot nutiden och framtiden framställs mångkulturalismen som ett hot mot arvet efter folkhemmet. Berättelsens sensmoral är att samhället är på väg mot en katastrofal utveckling där den svenska nationen i värsta fall kan komma att utplånas.
Resultaten som presenteras i denna uppsats är relevanta eftersom de synliggör både hur politiker använder historia och hur berättelser är viktiga för människors behov av att orientera sig i tid och rum. De kan användas för att, förutom att nå en ökad förståelse för Sverigedemokraternas framgång och popularitet, jämföras med andra fall av politiskt bruk av historia. Det teoretiska ramverket kan med fördel användas för vidare forskning inom historieförmedling och människans existentiella behov av att ingå i ett meningssammanhang som är större än den enskilda individen.
