- Abstract
- As a result of the increasing gang criminality, the lethal firearm violence has enhanced since the 1990’s in Sweden which is a development that has in several ways resulted in a social problem. For example are the perpetrator and thereby gang members getting younger, the connection between gang and lethal firearm violence has eventuated in a lower number of solved cases, which is partly due to the illegal weapons that are used, and the authorities can't intervene to prevent the lethal firearm violence because of the gangs rebellious attitude. At the same time, there's a lack of analysis about the lethal firearm violence which means that there is a need to study this criminal behavior and why it is perpetrated. What's known about this... What's known about this violence is that it's often perpetrated in urban 15-areas (especially in the three cities Malmö, Göteborg and Stockholm). These areas are characterized by for example low education, unemployment, segregation and exclusion, which also are the features that symbolize the criminals of lethal firearm violence. Hereby, this study, in sociology of law, aims to seek how the social context that characterize the perpetrators can be used when understanding the lethal firearm violence, by using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of, among others, capital and Robert K. Merton's strain theory. Therefore, the question that this essay aims to answer is; What significance can the social context of the perpetrators have when understanding the lethal firearm violence? To answer this question, various literatures, governmental documents and official statistics from for example Brå and SCB has been used. When analyzing these data by using Bourdieu's and Merton's theories, this study has provided the result that there's stratification in the society where people are divided into different classes. The perpetrators of lethal firearm violence often lack capital (e.g. education, work and economy) which leads to that the goals in society can't be achieved through legitimate means. By the lack of capital, segregation and discrimination, the perpetrators are assigned to a lower social class. To accumulate capital, the gang criminality will therefore become a tempting way of achieving the goals through innovation. Even the fact that the authorities don't intervene, promote the perpetration of lethal firearm violence. (Less)
