- This thesis takes on the distribution of influence at the local level of the Church of Sweden from a legitimacy theory perspective. It is argued that the high levels of member resignation could be viewed as a manifested lack of confidence due to the failing legitimacy of the Church of Sweden. In order to continue the academic discussion on the democratic relation between the Church and its members, this thesis portraits the democratic system of the parish (in Swedish: församling), the local organ within the Church of Sweden. - This thesis takes on the distribution of influence at the local level of the Church of Sweden from a legitimacy theory perspective. It is argued that the high levels of member resignation could be viewed as a manifested lack of confidence due to the failing legitimacy of the Church of Sweden. In order to continue the academic discussion on the democratic relation between the Church and its members, this thesis portraits the democratic system of the parish (in Swedish: församling), the local organ within the Church of Sweden. It conducts a survey for democratically elected representatives in six parishes, in order to illustrate how these representatives perceive the current distribution of influence, as well as their preferred distribution of influence, in their parish.
The empirical results of the survey investigation are that there are two main groups of actors within the parish. The first group, consisting of members and representatives, are perceived as relatively weak, and preferably should be empowered, while the second group, considering of elites within the parish, is perceived relatively powerful and preferably should be weakened. The executive board differs from this pattern, as it is perceived as an elite actor that preferably should be empowered. (Less)
