- Strategies and goals of social mix as a mean to fight against problems that are connected to segregation has had an upsurge since the beginning of 2000 in urban planning. The aim of this study is to acknowledge and furthermore problematize the dominant discourse of a planning for social mix. The logic behind the political discourse is that heterogeneous areas brings better life chances for people, which has been criticized by many academics in the field. Some scholars mean that the first type of rhetoric is used to cover processes of gentrification. To fulfil the purpose a discourse analysis is used to look at strategic planning documents from Malmö municipality. I argue that a certain discourse of a planning for social mix is institutionalized in Malmö municipality, which means that the strategies are taken as a “natural” way to achieve a coherent city. I also argue that when the discourse becomes concrete in the urban spaces conflicting discourses proves. (Less)
