- Bike sharing systems can be found in an ever-increasing number of cities around the world. In many of these cities, bike sharing system have been very successful. In Lund, one of the objectives of the bike sharing system, Lundahoj, was to get car commuters to change travel mode to bike sharing in combination with public transport and thus decrease the emission of green house gases. The aim of this study is to investigate if this objective can be met and also to see what factors influence people to choose to use a bike sharing system. - Bike sharing systems can be found in an ever-increasing number of cities around the world. In many of these cities, bike sharing system have been very successful. In Lund, one of the objectives of the bike sharing system, Lundahoj, was to get car commuters to change travel mode to bike sharing in combination with public transport and thus decrease the emission of green house gases. The aim of this study is to investigate if this objective can be met and also to see what factors influence people to choose to use a bike sharing system. A literature study was done to see what results could be expected and a Logit-modelling was performed to estimate a theoretical value. This was then compared to measured values for Lundahoj. In Lund, Lundahoj only replaced 2 % of car commuting journeys compared to 7 – 20 % in other cities and 14 % using the Logit-model. This combined with the low user number shows that the effect on the emissions of green house gases is miniscule. This study shows that time, money, configuration and integration with public transport services like shared subscription and traveling apps are important factors for choosing to use bike sharing systems. Furthermore, there are social aspects, like image, safety and social norms, that are also crucial to get people to switch to bike sharing, (Less)
