Abstract
In previous regulations a 1,20-meter-wide door in large halls could be exchanged with two 0,90-meter-wide doors. This exchange is not mentioned in current regulations but the concept may still be useful in buildings of today. The aim of this paper was to investigate if there were grounds for this regulation and if it is accepted by experts and the general public. Another aim was to investigate the positive effects the presence of an obstacle has in connection with an egress route. Based on surveys and physical experiments this exchange does not encounter restrictions neither with the general public or with experts. The outflow of people through two narrower egress routes with the stated dimensions is also found to be greater than that of... (More)

The outflow of people through two narrower egress routes with the stated dimensions is also found to be greater than that of the wider 1,20-meter door. Obstacles are not a preferred feature in connection with egress routes. Neither could any positive effects be observed with an obstacle in regards to people outflow. (Less)
