- Abstract
- In this essay I have tried to study and examine how users of illegal narcotic substances reach out for help and support on Drogakuten, a sub forum on the message board Flashback forum instead of turning to the health care system. I have tried to look at the interaction between the members to see if there is a harm reduction philosophy present on the board. I have also tried to analyze Drogakuten as a social world and what discourses that are created on the message board that also form the message board itself. - In this essay I have tried to study and examine how users of illegal narcotic substances reach out for help and support on Drogakuten, a sub forum on the message board Flashback forum instead of turning to the health care system. I have tried to look at the interaction between the members to see if there is a harm reduction philosophy present on the board. I have also tried to analyze Drogakuten as a social world and what discourses that are created on the message board that also form the message board itself. My study was conducted as a qualitative research where I through hidden observation acted as a fly on the wall and gathered data that are openly accessible. My results show Drogakuten as a social world where members that are asking for help are expected to be well informed about the substances and dosage they are using and also to give feedback on the outcome of their situation. The discourse analysis showed a variety of discourses that where aimed on helping or encouraging those searching for substance related health issues to turn to the health care system or emergency medical services. Finally, there were two adverse discourses where one were centered around the sense of community and focus on the member’s wellbeing contra the discourse in which members condemn and ridicule the members that are asking for help. Through analysis of the discourses a harm reduction philosophy was present through some of the discourses but scattered through the message board and not openly expressed as harm reduction. (Less)
