Abstract
A study is presented in the report regarding fires that have occurred in the USA between 2007 and 2015 in tall residential buildings with wood frame. The work is based on fire investigations compiled by NFPA and does only include large-scale fires and fatal fires.
The general conclusions that have been made are that sprinklers have a positive impact on the extent of a fire and that an installation of sprinkler in buildings save lives. The sprinkler system operated in 96,7 % of the studied cases, but only operated effectively in 68 % of the cases. Further, in buildings established in the 1970s, fires spread outside the original fire compartments in all the studied cases. In buildings built after the 1970s, the percentage of fires that... In buildings built after the 1970s, the percentage of fires that spread outside the original fire compartment was reduced to below 50 percent for each decade. The last conclusion is that to prevent fire spread between fire compartments in wood buildings, it is important that the detailed construction solutions are properly executed. (Less)
