Abstract
Over the years Donald Trump has made several controversial statements
regarding women. Despite that, 42% of all American women who voted in the
2016 election, voted for him. This study examined what it was that made women vote for him. The method used was qualitative, and to collect material, interviews with six women, who voted for Trump, were conducted. General information on voting behavior among American women and voting demographic statistics were also gathered as a complement to the interviews. The result showed common factors in several of the interviewees’ answers that also matched the voting demographic statistics, e.g. all interviewed women stated that religion was important to them. Recurring factors as to what it was that... (More)

The result showed common factors in several of the interviewees’ answers that also matched the voting demographic statistics, e.g. all interviewed women stated that religion was important to them. Recurring factors as to what it was that made the interviewees vote for Trump were for instance that he was strong, business-minded and a
family man. The results of the interviews and the complementary material were analyzed based on three theories on voting behavior. The analysis of the result, based on the theories, showed that a combination of two of the theories; the politic-sociologic and the social-psychological, could explain the results in the most satisfactory manner.
