- Abstract (Swedish)
- In this essay a discourse analysis, inspired by Michel Foucault, is applied on the Swedish social democratic party’s policies on employment. Specifically, the feasibility conditions of the discourse are examined – that is, why employment is problematized today.

The purpose of the essay is to make visible and analyze conceptions within the discourse which are seldom questioned. Policy documents of the social democratic party constitute the material that is examined in the analysis.
The conceptions within the discourse are that the labor market is undergoing constant change and that competition increases. This puts increasingly higher demands on the wage worker in terms of flexibility and education. Competitiveness and job creation are sought after and employment is viewed as beneficial to the society as a whole, as well as for the individual, why concurrence between different societal institutions is advocated.
What constitute the feasibility conditions of the discourse is the changing labor market. The social democratic response, in today’s neoliberal context, in the form of adaptation does particularly not benefit the wage workers, since they continuously have to resign themselves to market demands. Therefore, the social democratic romanticizing of work is necessary; it is a way of self-preservation, in a hegemonic neoliberal society. (Less)
