- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to investigate how female street artist experience being part of a masculine subculture. The theoretical framework is based on theories concerning patriarchy and gender roles, graffiti and masculinity and public space. Henri Lefvebre’s theory regarding the social production of space shows that female street artist do not face obstacles in the material room but in the social room. Nancy Macdonald’s theory concerning graffiti and masculinity shows that masculinity is something that is made, not something that is constant. Therefore men involved with the graffiti subculture must prove that they are men, while women must prove they are not women.

The methodology for this essay is based on Donna Haraway’s theory regarding Situated Knowledge. This inclines that all knowledge is contextual and embodied. The empirical data was collected trough interviews with female street artist living and creating street art in the city of Malmö, Sweden.
The results of this study show that female street artist face obstacles being respected and accepted as members of the street art community by other (male) members. The female street artists are able to adapt their femininity in order to gain advantages in certain situations. (Less)
