- Abstract
- This paper examines the effects of the planned high speed railway between Malmö and Stockholm (known as Sverigeförhandlingen) on the tourism industry in the municipality of Höör through landscape changes. There will be no railway station in the municipality on that particular railway line meaning that trains will pass by. The paper examines stepwise how the tourism industry in the municipality is organized, the landscape’s role within the tourism industry and the effects the railway has on the landscape. This study is applying Yi-Fu Tuans theory about space and place and utilising a historical perspective by Atkins et al. In addition, a theory based on knowledge about the tourism industry is applied to understand Höör’s tourism mechanism... (More)

The paper examines stepwise how the tourism industry in the municipality is organized, the landscape’s role within the tourism industry and the effects the railway has on the landscape. This study is applying Yi-Fu Tuans theory about space and place and utilising a historical perspective by Atkins et al. In addition, a theory based on knowledge about the tourism industry is applied to understand Höör’s tourism mechanism by examining the mobility of tourists and locations as mass products. Upon analyzing public planning documents and interviews with officials, the study concludes the following. A high speed railway disrupts the cultural landscape which the tourism industry uses as a resource for the packaging of outdoor experience products. Because of the relatively small size of the particular tourism businesses in the municipality, this may decrease the attractiveness for prospective new business investing in the area. This is because the landscape is being used as a resource by those businesses and the future of this resource is uncertain. (Less)
