Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
During the fall in 2016 the city of Gothenburg announced a competition for a new house of culture located in Bergsjön.
Bergsjön is a district in the north east part of the city. A lot of people view the area as isolated from the rest of the city, both physically and socially. The near intact development from the 60s and 70s, reflect the ideals of the time which means both great possibilities and challenges.
The district is also a part of the so called “mellanstaden”, a part of the city where most of the development of Gothenburg is going to take place. This means that Bergsjön is facing some big changes.
In the brief for the competition the house is being described in two different ways. On one hand as a institution for the entire city,... (More)

The district is also a part of the so called “mellanstaden”, a part of the city where most of the development of Gothenburg is going to take place. This means that Bergsjön is facing some big changes.
In the brief for the competition the house is being described in two different ways. On one hand as a institution for the entire city, with the expectation that the house will function as a landmark, and be a prominent piece of architecture. On the other hand as a building that primarily should act as an important meeting place with in the local area.
I wanted to reflect on what meaning a house of culture has in this context. What impact could a building like this have on the neighborhood? What messages are communicated through these kind of projects and how does that reflect in the architecture?
I have approached these questions by using other houses of culture as references. The conclusions I have made have then functioned as a tool in my design process.
The aim for the project is to focus on the relationship between the house and the environment rather than the activities within the building. The conditions of the site have therefore been the most significant factor for the outcome of the project. The design proposal is presented in the end of the report. (Less)
