Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cohesion and efficiency in work teams, as measured by a Swedish translation of the Group Environment Questionnaire - Work Team Version and Team Effectiveness Scale. The study examined in which extent perceived cohesion correlates with perceived efficiency within workgroups at a police station with policemen working on the field. A part of the purpose was also to investigate how cohesion can be understood in relation to the professional culture of the police, and what can be considered as effectiveness within the police as an organization and for polices working on the field. The number of participants was 41, all policemen working on the field at the same police station... (More)

A part of the purpose was also to investigate how cohesion can be understood in relation to the professional culture of the police, and what can be considered as effectiveness within the police as an organization and for polices working on the field. The number of participants was 41, all policemen working on the field at the same police station in a Swedish city. The result showed a strong correlation (r = .792) between task oriented cohesion and overall efficiency. Social cohesion had a medium strong correlation with all subscales of efficiency (from r = .423 to r = .478). Individual attraction to the group correlated significant only with the subscale "change" of efficiency (r = .398). The strong link between task-oriented cohesion and overall efficiency can be understood through the strong team spirit within the professional culture of the police, which is comparable to that in sports team. The survey does not show the direction of the relationship. Efficiency within the police is discussed as a complex term. (Less)
