Abstract
The purpose of the study was to analyze mothers’ understanding of their children’s internet usage to create a profound understanding of how they can and cannot regulate the child´s internet usage. We conducted eight semi-structured interviews with mothers whom have children in the ages 9 to 17 in Skåne. This empirical material was analyzed based on relevant previous research and theoretical concepts based on the themes which are central in the empirical material, such as childhood and gender. The result of our study displayed that protecting the children is a method to regulate the child’s internet usage. The mothers believe that the child needs greater protection at a certain age. The result of our study displayed that protecting the children is a method to regulate the child’s internet usage. The mothers believe that the child needs greater protection at a certain age. The older the child is, the more integrity the children will be assigned, whereupon older children will not be protected to the equal extent. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that the mothers experienced that the need of protection is essential to regulate and protect their children from certain content on the internet. The content that they choose to protect their children from differs depending on the gender of the child. However, we have not been able to demonstrate whether there is a difference between girls’ and boys’ need for protection. (Less)
