Abstract
The punctuality of passenger transport within the Swedish railroad network has been featured heavily in Swedish media. A study done by the European Commission proclaim that the levels of dissatisfaction towards the railroad system is among the top within Europe. The punctuality is strongly connected to faults related to railroad switches, which stands for a quarter of total delays. The switches within the Swedish railroad system, which numbers in the 15 000, are presenting a higher degree of fatigue and stress as a result of higher traffic volume. Continuous maintenance of the railroad switches is a crucial part to maintain the level of functionality which the railroad system requires. The annual maintenance cost is approximately 7 billion... The annual maintenance cost is approximately 7 billion SEK, divided into two parts: remedial- and preventative maintenance. This study has been made to determine the generated cost of late arrivals in response to an increase of disturbances within the railroad system, with a primarily focus on causes and underlying problems related to railroad switches. The study is made with the use Trafikverket’s tools Ofelia and BIS and focuses on the rail switches between Hässleholm and Älmhult, a part of Södra stambanan. The findings show that the most common actions to solve occurring problems are: • Repair and exchange of faulty parts • Lubrication of components and repositioning of the switch blade • Disposal of debris between switch components A strong connection can be seen between old switches and more severe remedial action, which in turn results in a lower degree of punctuality. Delays caused by switch problems generated a loss of approximately 3 billion SEK between the years of 2013-2016. It would be possible in theory to change 1000 railroad switches with this sum and would greatly increase the punctuality. (Less)
