Abstract
Green roofs are becoming increasingly more popular due to the fact of their many benefits. The aim of this report is to investigate the level of fire safety in extensive green roofs, which includes a variety of sedum, herbs and grass, in urban environments. Research is also done to clarify which parameters are affecting fire spread on extensive green roofs and to which extent. The objective was to present strategies and measures to lower the risk of ignition and flame spread. The report was conducted through a literature study on the subject extensive green roofs in addition with two different experiments investigating fire spread and vertical temperature influence in the case of a fire in extensive green roofs. It was concluded that the... (More)

The report was conducted through a literature study on the subject extensive green roofs in addition with two different experiments investigating fire spread and vertical temperature influence in the case of a fire in extensive green roofs. It was concluded that the risk for a substantial fire spread in extensive green roofs was low and largely dependent on the level of moisture in the material. Furthermore, the tests implied that such a roof covering (including growing medium) provided sufficient fire protection to the underlying layers. (Less)
