(2017) SKOM12 20171Department of Strategic Communication
- Abstract
- This study investigates how young women experience and understand purpose- driven advertising with feminist and norm-breaking messages, and the conse- quences of their perception regarding the ideal body. The phenomenon is exempli- fied by the use of three current campaigns from 2016, all of which say that they have a woman-promoting message. Semi-structured interviews with thirteen young women were conducted. The study has, with theories of consumption cul- ture, Hall's theory of coding and decoding messages, and theories about objectifi- cation and the male gaze demonstrated how the experience of purpose-driven feminist advertising is influenced by a number of factors. The results show that if the messages in the campaigns went well... (More)

The results show that if the messages in the campaigns went well enough in line with the interests and values of the interviewees, they could also ignore the skepticism they felt about the authenticity of the corporations, thus accepting the campaigns' messages to see the positive circumstances from a wider social perspective. The women in the study showed knowledge about the fact that corporations use purpose-driven ad- vertising and incorporate feminist messages into it as a strategy. However, they chose to accept and overlook this marketing strategy in favor of spreading femi- nist values and messages. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
